Hush Hush

Slick and small on the outside, but larger than life within, Hush Hush is a bar that doesn’t disappoint.

The Venue
You’ll find this bar just past the arches of Gloucester Road. Darkly atmospheric, with incredibly comfy sofa seating, good art and excellent lighting, Hush Hush certainly gets the whole bar thing just right.

Steering its course on the right side of trendy, its contemporary and well-thought-out design lends the place an excellent ambience.

The narrow layout doesn’t quite provide room for the frenetic Friday night dancing some of us are accustomed to indulging in, but it's an excellent sit-down joint.

They also have generous seating in a heated garden area – so much more pleasant for the smokers than huddling in exile on the pavement.

The People
It seems to be frequented by a pretty informal but well-turned-out crowd, who are more often than not lovers of contemporary dance music. It can get pretty loud when they crank it up at one of their numerous DJ sets, so go early if you want to relax and hear yourself think.

Music includes funk, soul, house and drum 'n' bass and it varies across Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday when Hush Hush is open. It's also available for hire for private parties.

The Drink
Noteworthy is the Sagres, a really good Portuguese lager on tap. All draught pints are £2.70 to £2.90 – you’ll find all the usual suspects including Guinness, Strongbow, Fosters, Heineken and Kronenbourg.

They are strong on spirits in terms of choice, and pretty cheap - singles with a mixer are £3.20, and a double is £4.

Also available is a great range of cocktails costing from £4 to £5 a two-for-one deal which runs weekdays before 9pm. Worth taking advantage of.

The Last Word
An independent, atmospheric bar with plenty of good live music.
