Excellent food and home-made bar snacks are spoiled by the generally slow and unwelcoming attitude of some of the staff. The management's style of customer service varies from aloof to deeply condescending. Perhaps this is a prerequisite of running a gastropub, but for me it renders the place utterly charmless.
What a great little watering-hole/eaterie for Lower Knowle/Totterdown - just what the area needs. We sat near the bar at a lovely wooden table and drank an excellent beer with deceptively-small dishes of very tasty chicken, duck, and trout. We were well-stuffed and very satisfied by the end of it, and congratulated ourselves for finding a meal of such good value. Well done, Matt, et al.

really liked the beer garden here and added to the relaxed atmosphere the star and dove gives off. the staff were really helpful when i asked about meals (too many times have i ask what a certain dish was to a waiter/tress only to be given a shrug or blank stare in response), something as a nut allergist (is that the right word?) is highly important. the food was brilliant and this place is among the best in bristol.
One of the best places in Bristol to eat, drink and relax. I haven't eaten in the restaurant yet, but I've eaten in the bar a few times and the food was amazing. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. Looking forward to trying to restaurant soon. Really good selection of ales and ciders too.
Just stumbled accross this little gem after spending the day in victoria Park. downstairs the decor is an eclectic mish mash of furniture and pictures which look well loved to say the least! The pub serves up greatpub food, a mx of British, Italian and other influences on the downstairs menu, they have a nice beer garden too. Didnt venture upstairs but from the menu I gather it has more of a restaurant feel than downstairs, seemed quite busy with lots of people heading up the stairs. All in all a lovely welcoming atmosphere with a wide variety of people and great food too, top marks.
