The ViewBristol Review
This simple Chinese restaurant serves excellent food. It's beautifully decorated and has quiet atmosphere. The VenueThe Golden Dragon is on the main street through Downend. It's very simple inside, with basic tables and chairs on one side and booths on the other. At the back of the restaurant you'll find the bar, which is opposite the toilets.
Typically Chinese decor fills the restaurant with motifs everywhere and some very pretty cushions in one booth. Its red and black colour scheme is very complementary to the restaurant and makes it feel oriental and cosy.
The Golden Dragon looks very clean and feels very comfortable. It has a takeaway attached to the restaurant which is served by the same kitchen.
The PeopleThe Golden Dragon is warm and cosy. Staff are friendly and helpful and everything is easy to find and accessible. It can be very quiet and often has few customers. But when it does, the clientele are usually locals so their dynamic is a real mix, but it's often mostly couples.
The FoodKnives and forks are laid out on the tables but if you prefer to eat with chopsticks they are available if you ask. You're given three menus, one for the drink and two for food. This can be a little confusing as it's not clear why there are two food menus but you can order from either and neither is for specials or set meals.
It's typical Chinese cuisine and you can have traditional, or Cantonese-style food such as sweet and sour pork. Dishes are priced between £4 and £6 for most items on the menu, rice is around £2 depending upon which kind you choose and starters and sides start at £2.
Set meals are available as are English dishes should you have any diners with you who don’t eat Chinese. It all tastes great and isn’t greasy. Portion sizes are fair and when two are sharing a meal you won’t end up with much waste.
The DrinkThe bar is well stocked with spirits, wines and beers. There is a good selection of all of these and the prices are very reasonable with bottled wine from around £10. Traditional Chinese teas are also available and are around £1.50.
The Last WordThe Golden Dragon is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. The food is tasty, everything is well priced and the staff are attentive without being invasive.
