Where
Boyces Avenue and Kings Road, Clifton
To mark the end of the summer, the chaps from Amoeba, The Hophouse and other Clifton bars are holding a giant free party. The Clifton street festival is a quirky take on the English garden fete with circus performers, cocktail bars and live bands.
Hot Tubs
Every bank holiday this year Amoeba have hosted free garden parties, and they’ve been really popular. The theme revolved around the quintessential English garden party - gone a bit wild. Hot tubs were installed in the garden, there were open mic sessions, and turf was laid around the pavement. In the spirit of this sort of summer high-jinks Amoeba have decided to host the Clifton street festival as a finale to their season of frivolity.
Boyces Avenue and Kings Road
This giant free street party is testament to how popular the summer season has been at Amoeba. As it's only a small venue they knew they had to expand if they were going to give the end of summer the sort of party it deserved. The Hophouse, which is just next door, have agreed to help host the Clifton street festival, along with a few other businesses in the area. Boyces Avenue and Kings Road will be closed to traffic to ensure there's enough space for everyone to let their hair down.
Street Croquet
As it’s the first Clifton street festival to be held, the running order is pretty flexible, but organisers are promising circus performers, streets bedecked with crazy bunting, live bands, affordable art, street croquet, cider, a barbecue, cupcakes and some decadent outdoor drinking courtesy of a street cocktail bar outside Amoeba.
Vaudeville
The theme is Vaudevillian English Country Fete and you're invited to dress up. As it's a community event, everyone is welcome to join in, whether you're simply a party-goer or you want to put up a stall, perform or do anything creative towards the festival. The road closures will enable local traders, performers, musicians, charities and anyone else doing anything quirky to party in the street.
DJ Sets
In case the weather takes a turn for the worst (this is England after all!) there are contingency plans in place and a huge marquee will be erected if it rains. And the party won't stop once the sun has gone down. There'll be DJ sets at Amoeba until 1am and to get you in the Bank Holiday mood there's a weekend-long beer festival at The Hophouse.
Clifton street festival takes place at Kings Road and Boyces Avenue in Clifton from 12pm to 12am, 30th August 2009. The event is free.
