We were in Bristol on a visit from London, and fell over the George at Backwell on our way our to see the Cheddar Gorge. It just looked so understated and tempting, rather like several modern foodie pubs in London, so we decided to stop for a bite of lunch.
It was an inspired choice, the manageress told us after we had enquired that the establishment had been completely refurbished and only re-opened 4 mths ago [as of early October 2011] by a young and enthusiastic team. The decor is a modern twist on traditional style, the welcome and service excellent.
The selection of beers were positively legendary and the food to die for - and we say that having sampled a lot of the finest London restaurants over the last 10 yrs. We chose a selection of 'bar menu' smaller plates and every one of them was stunning, from the 'Boxed Baked Camembert' to the 'Beef & Corriander Meatballs', Breads and Mackerel Goujons, all were expertly cooked, beautifully presented and the flavours lived up to the visual expectation.
I may sound like I am gushing a little, but the George is worth it and we will definitely visit again should we be anywhere near Bristol or even just passing through.
I wish them every success in making what was an average, under used pub, a great eating and drinking venue for locals and visitors alike.
