I would have to disagree with the previous rating. I have recently visited the Hope and Anchor with my family for Sunday lunch and have been pleasantly surprised.

We started with soup which came in a large 1-portion/pp tureen, piping hot, with a doorstep slice of buttered bread (which can be white or granary).

Interesting array of flavours - I would recommend the red pepper and goat's cheese. To follow we had roast, I chose the lamb, absolutely masses of meat with roast potatoes, new potatoes, cabbage, carrots, broccoli and a Yorkshire pudding, with a generous serving of gravy.

Greedily enough we even ordered pudding which was more of an "eyes bigger than our bellies" moment, so two of us shared the apple and blackberry crumble with cream, it was yummy yum.

Four stars because it was delicious, with a good ambiance in the room (very busy) however the gravy was too runny for my liking.

"The lamb curry (£7.95) looked like one of those Vesta packet mixes... cubes of mushy, overcooked meat festered on a bed of alarmingly orange rice in a pool of murky, watery sauce""All you could discern was industrial-strength tomato peree""It's one of the few occasions when I've cut the meal short - not because I feared that the puddings might be bought in, but because I was worried they might not be""How can a place that majors on food churn out stuff like this and get away with it?... the one star is for the chips."
