The ViewBristol Review
This Moroccan-themed underground club on the Triangle shouldn’t be overlooked with its great decor, range of music, outside smoking area and free shisha to boot!
The Venue
Located on Queen’s Road in Clifton, Po Na Na is in the perfect location if you want to check out one of Whiteladies Road’s many bars before hitting a club.
It is by no means one of Bristol’s largest venues but there is plenty of seating indoors and a heated terrace outdoors, which becomes just as much of a social hotspot as the dancefloor as the night progresses.
Po Na Na achieves the tricky feat of being a themed spot without being a tacky homage to all things Moroccan. In fact, clubbing in a cave with mirrored walls will feel very normal after a while!
The People
There is no doubt that during the week, Po Na Na is very much a student venue thanks to the range of cheap and cheerful nights which it hosts.
However, Saturday’s Po Na Ra (the name should give a hint to the clientele) sees much more in the way of Bristol locals and visitors from further afield with groups of rugby boys and giggling girls thrown in for good measure.
The Music
Po Na Na offers an eclectic mix of music throughout the week; Monday’s Earspasm is their breakbeat, dupstep, trance and electro night (£4/£3 NUS) and Tuesday’s FatPoppaDaddys offers as much alternative music as you can handle, with entry from £1 with a FatPoppaDaddys card or £2/£3 without.
However, aside from these specialist nights, most evenings, like Thursday’s Shisha Mash Up and Friday’s Fancy Footwork provide a wide variety of tunes - all in the name of dancing.
The Drinks
Be warned that there is one lone bar in Po Na Na so prepare to queue. There are plenty of drinks on offer; expect to pay £3.50 for a bottle of beer or spirit and mixer at the weekend and a bottle of wine will set you back around £12.50.
If you’re hitting the club in the week, you can reap the benefits of some great deals. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, shots are a mere £1, bottles of beer £1.50 and doubles are only £3.
The Last Word
For such an intimate venue, Po Na Na has a lot to offer, especially if you’re a cash-strapped student in need of a good night out. The staff are friendly, the atmosphere is fun and the dancefloor is always full.
