Booked a Sunday lunch for a party of 12 people to celebrate a 60th birthday. Turned up only to be told that the kitchen is closed and there is no chef. Apparently, there was a party there the previous evening which went on well into the early hours so it was clear that the staff simply failed to turn up. No one had the decency to inform me and if it hadn't been for The Lock and Weir next door (which was excellent food, service and price by the way) we would have been stranded!
Shame on you Chequers and for anyone thinking of booking this pub, well, they just don't deserve the custom - go the The Lock and Weir next door, you wont be disappointed.

I worked here over 30 years ago. I've just moved back into the area, so I thought I'd see what the old place was like. They say that you should never go back. It's certainly gone downhill in my absence. The car park has even more pot holes than I remember. The place was noisy, full of people who looked too young to be there, some even with pushchairs. There were only two wall lights illuminated, although that was probably just as well. The restaurant seemed not to be there any more. The bar tables were sticky. The evening was notable for one thing, though: it's the first time I've been asked how I would like a gammon steak cooked. Whilst my partner was pleasantly surprised with her lamb shank, my food would have to have phenomenal to make up for the surroundings, and it didn't fail to disappoint. My gammon steak was edible and the fresh pineapple slice looked like a good idea, but just gave it an acidic taint. Avoid. There's a Harvester just up Court Farm Road in Longwell Green.
This was the worst roast dinner that my friends and I have EVER had.... The meat was dry, the vegetables were obviously not fresh and of poor quality, the yorkshire puddings were inedible and all of the food was cold! Customer service was poor! The best part of our dinner was the "ice" in our drinks! Back to the best pub for a roast the Lock and Weir (next door).
Attended the chequers yesterday and have to say was a very enjoyable experience, we had the chicken stack and lamb shank, which both were cooked to perfection! The staff friendly and the choice of music made our evening more relaxed. I disagree with complaints made down below and I will definitely like to say that if people had seen the pub five years ago, the place is a massive improvement. Love the location and am glad we live near such a perfect place, will definitely be back
visited this restaurant for the first time in years after being given a groupon coupon to the value of £41. 00 for fathers day, the place hasnt been cleaned properly in 20 odd years judging by the carpets and curtains,
straight away we were told the ribs were off and on questioning the middle aged woman who came to the table we were told "we are losing out on this groupon , everyone picks the most expensive item on the menu(hence the ribs being off at 12.95) on the plus side the steak was cooked to our liking and apart from cold hard peas was a reasonable meal.. I think they ought to realise if they do a promotion the idea is to get customers returning, -WE WONT BE
Just been and had a very nice meal starters were very nice the steak was cooked just right and the wife have the ribs which were also great and the sticky toffee pudding finished me off all in all cant wait to go back
Visited the Chequers for the first time in years after buying a Groupon deal; what a mistake. There wasn't one person in our party that had an acceptable meal. Both the meals with jacket potatoes were cold so weren't eaten. The roast chicken meal was pale, insipid and cold, so that went back. The replacement cod and chips was fine though. All the chips on the other meals were pale and hard so these were all left. One of our party had the pie of the day which was supposed to be chicken and mushroom. This came in an individual pot with still raw puff pastry on the top and inedible chips. The young lad serving us was very apologetic and did his best to put things right. He worked really hard and did a rally good job under difficult circumstances . The manager was a different story. He was totally dismissive and unappreciative of the awful food coming out of the kitchen. Won't be going there again! Will stick to the Old Lock and Weir next door in future!
I was a guest at a wedding party at the Chequers Inn on 15th September.
The food was very good and the service was excellent we found the landlord and wife very friendly as were the staff.
We then tried the carvery on Sunday 20th September and could not fault it either. Definetly will visit again.
excellent food sunday carvery is a must at only 6.95 went with my wife and son and will return soon
good to see real gravy and not bisto.
Visited the Chequers on May 24th 09
Will never go again! Carvery was OK in parts, beef and potatoes were OK, the rest of the veg was dire, bullet peas etc.
Out of our party of 6, two people wanted something from the main menu.
One chose the steak, this was like rubber, accompanied by the worst limp soggy chips we have ever seen and chequers speciality-bullet peas!
The other person chose veggie sausages and mash with onion gravy, the sausages were overcooked and the rest insipid.
The wait for these meals was about an hour long with no indication of this delay when ordering them.
The staff were polite and reasonably helpful. This is one place we will definitely been avoiding on our next trip to Bristol.
What a waste of good money!!
THE FOOD WAS EXCELLENT AS ALWAYS. THE MENU IS CHANGED REGULARLY GOOD VARIETY
The carvery was very good here, the meat was lovely.
