A cafe that aims to please, succeeds, for the most part.

The Venue
Tucked into a corner of what is a dead-end for cars (the street continues for pedestrians), Primrose Cafe's name is advertised boldly in yellow on its blue washed wall. This sturdy yellow bricked building is located at the entrance of the Clifton Arcade.

Primrose Cafe is divided into two spaces with a vivid blue coloured ground level area and the smaller, less flamboyant, light-wood dining room on the first floor. The exterior is surrounded by a narrow bank of alfresco seats that front full length windows.

On the ground floor, the ceiling is painted a midnight blue, dotted with impressions of a starry night. The walls are red and yellow, much like a child's bedroom. In the back of this space sits the counter/cashier, above and around there are chalkboard menus. The floor above is more homely, with warm wood furniture and colours.

The People
The two floors cater to almost every demographic. There is an organic, more sophisticated and calmer feel to the upstairs dining rooms to suit an older bunch while the downstairs exudes a curious aura that excites kids, students and young parents alike.

Even on a grey Bristol afternoon, the cafe is full. Unfortunately this leaves little space, and attention, for newcomers to take in the extensive menu. Unless you're a regular, or a target-eater, you will be a hurried customer here.

The Food
The menu is made up of predominantly pre-made foods and easy-to-assemble dishes. Sandwiches, pastas and salads are the main offerings. Sandwiches are available on four different types of breads and are priced between £4.50 and £5.50 - which is also about the going rate for salads and pasta dishes.

There's no written dessert menu - at least not on a big black board - but peek into the display area below the counter and you'll find the day's offerings. For something small and delectable, try a cupcake (£1.25 to £1.75). This cake is fluffy yet moist and substantial. Its batter and icing are just adequately sweet, making it the perfect afternoon snack.

The Drink
Coffees, teas, juices, presses, sodas, mineral waters and alcoholic beverages. Wine and beer options are not listed on the chalkboards, but ask and you shall be rewarded.

The Last Word
A bit of everything - a motto that is served right down to the menu. It may work after all.
