Little can go wrong with jazz as the music of choice.

The Venue
The Tantric Jazz Cafe Bar is a warming sight at night. Lights bounce off the exterior red wood frames making this little jazz bar glow. This aura is carried through to the cosy yellow walls of the cafe.

The two roomed bar is compact but seats are well spaced out. The band sits in the middle of the larger room - in a cleared space in front of the fireplace - and customers fill up the rest of this space and spill through to the next smaller room.

The bar is located in the latter, although the bar is accessible from both as there are hardly any partitions between the two rooms.

The People
Large fancily dressed groups who are having a night out fill Tantric Jazz. Tables are small and are easy to move and put together in groups. The atmosphere is dictated largely by the band. This can range from the sultry Latin jazz to dreamy world music. There is a resident band - Tantra - that plays at least twice a week. This local band often fronts other local acts.

The Food
Little bites are cooked to order or pre-made and dishes can still be ordered after the kitchen closes. The Mediterranean tapas menu is divided into vegetarian and meat-based. Dishes cost between £2.50 and £6.25, or £12.75 for a two person platter. The dessert menu is subject to regular change and you have to ask at the bar. All desserts cost £3.40 each.

The Drink
If you’re in a big group you can get a jug of Sangria for £15.25, or splurge £32 on a bottle of Champagne. For individual drinkers there’s a board full of wines (£2.95 for 175ml), or approximately six different kinds of beers (£2.80 to £2.90 each), spirits and mixers (from £2.50), and cocktails and shooters (£5.50 each). Those willing to stay sober can pick from juices (£1.85) and sodas to soft drinks (£1.60) and sparkling or still water (£1.65 each).

The Last Word
Live music, late night nibbles and loads of well concocted drinks make Tantric Jazz a potent pull.
