The ViewBristol Review

Traditional yet modern public house which, although geared towards dining, doesn't have the gastropub price tag.

The Venue
Originally a farm and outbuildings, the Willy Wicket has been converted into a traditional yet modern and spacious pub and restaurant. Located on the Wick Wick Roundabout on the Bristol ring road, it has a large car park and is easy to find.

There is a large outside seating area for al fresco dining both at the front and the side of the pub. The bar area is directly in front of the main entrance, with dining areas branching off to both the left and right.

The People
Staff are friendly and, because you order and pay for your food at the bar, (you get given a wooden spoon with a number on it to help the waiting staff find you) the atmosphere is very relaxed and unhurried.

The dining areas are functional not fussy, and are filled with wooden tables and comfortable chairs. Families are welcome and the pub has a nice buzzy atmosphere as it is always reasonably busy.

The Food
There's a great mix of modern dishes and traditional pub favourites. Starters include crab cakes with mango salsa, baked camembert, grilled chicken skewers or traditional king prawn cocktail. Expect to pay around £3 to £5.50 per starter.

Main meals include fish and chips (£6.95), beef and stout pie (£7.95), sausage and mash (£6.50). For meat lovers there's a selection of steaks, burgers, chicken or gammon – all chargrilled. Prices range from £7 to £12.50 depending on the cut of meat.

Fresh fish and house specials are also available, such as lamb shank and five-spiced duck. Again, prices are around £7 to £10.

Most dishes come with potatoes and either salad or vegetables. Portions are large and the food is freshly cooked and tasty.

Also worth a mention is the Sunday roast. There's a choice of three meats which come with all the trimmings, and are under £8 per head.

If you can fit one in, their desserts are also really good. Treats include chocolate profiteroles, crumble, cheesecake, sticky toffee pudding and ice creams. These cost around £4.50 each, and they're worth it as they taste homemade, which is a welcome change from the prepackaged puddings you find in some pubs and restaurants.

The Drink
A wide range of wines are available by the glass (large or small) and bottle, and are reasonably priced (a bottle of house wine is £9.50).

The Willy Wicket also serves a selection of local guest ales as well as draught lager (Amstel, Carling and Stella among others), Guinness and Blackthorn cider.

And, if you're suffering from the night before, they serve freshly squeezed juices (a wide range in summer) alongside soft drinks, tea, coffees and other hot drinks.

The Last Word
The Willy Wicket is a modern, friendly pub serving great food at reasonable prices. It has a well stocked bar, friendly staff and families are welcome.
