An intimate, relaxed and very popular bistro with bags of character. There's plenty to choose from and the quality is excellent.

The Venue
Tucked away just off the main road from Clifton Downs into the city, Max’s is unassuming from the outside. The signage is classy and the paintwork clean. A small entrance door leads straight into the main eating area which is set out with tables for two along the right-hand wall and also near the bar on the left.

Further back there are tables joined together for larger groups, but there is clearly the ability to mix and match according to the clientele. Tables are decorated with real flowers and the lighting is a subtle blend of candles and gentle electric bulbs.

The People
Lots of two seater tables aren't here for no reason. Max's Italian Bistro is a very friendly, romantic place. The owner, Max, greets you as if you were the only person eating, and has an engaging sense of humour. If you are of a quieter disposition however, he is sensitive and not intrusive.

The staff are polite, attentive and keen to please. And the crowd that come here are a good representation of Bristol folk. No-one is made to feel out of place and it doesn't matter if you're smartly dressed or very casual. Max, who is originally from Italy, has created a Continental style restaurant so eating good food and enjoying good company is what it's all about.

The Food
The menu is based on Italian cuisine and there's plenty of choice, even for vegans and vegetarians.

The calamari starter is delicious and is served with a knockout sauce. The beef sirloin is tender and moist with delicate herb hints, the monkfish roulade succulent, tasty and beautifully presented. The vegetables and side orders are cooked perfectly and presented with as much care as the main dish. There is great pride taken in every item served. Prices are around £6.95 to £8.95 for starters and £11.50 to £14.95 for mains.

There are no fancy surprises with the desserts, but they are gorgeous both in presentation and taste.

The Drink
There is a wide, carefully chosen selection of beers, wines and aperitifs. The Riva is a medium-priced choice that is a perfect accompaniment to the food. The Champagnes and spirits are very tempting. Non-alcoholic options include fresh fruit juices and organic presses as well as the usual fare.

The Last Word
A top-notch restaurant with a homely, welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel very special. It's not cheap, but worth the dent in the bank balance.
