I was at a loose end last Sunday evening with my wife away visiting relatives so chose to try the Thali Cafe on St Marks RD
Thali Cafe, St Marks Rd
To start - Mumbai City Snacks, Samosa, Onion bhaji and Bonda a kind of spicy potato dumpling, Kerala salad with yogurt sauce. Quite spicy, left a nice warm feeling in my mouth.
Main - Southern Thali, Goan fish curry, Thoran, a kind of butter bean and coconut dish, Tarka Dhal , Rice and Kerala Salad and chilli sauce. Subtle flavours deliciously different
Desert - Kulfi. Lovely
A very different Indian eating experience. If you haven't been yet - go soon
I heard it had good reviews, but was disappointed. It was full and noisy when I visited (16/12/09). There was a selection of just two thalis. The prices was reasonable, but I left feeling hungry. Totterdown Thali has a better selection.
Wide range of food? no, no, no. Once you've had a bland thali there is no more choice...especially if you don't eat fish. Rubbish. Just cos it's cheap and 'in' doesn't mean it's good. I could name about 20 places better to eat and just as good value for money.
After to hearing good things about here I popped in for dinner with my girlfriend. We had the best Indian food ive had for a long time. She had a fish dish which was the best and i would recomend it to all!
