The ViewBristol Review
You could be forgiven for overlooking Native given that it's tucked away down an alley on Small Street. But if you're into anything from jazz to drum and bass, it's definitely worth checking out.The VenueNative isn't the biggest club Bristol has to offer, but it's certainly achieved its aim of playing great music in a chilled out, intimate venue.
One large room, split over two levels, Native combines a rocking dancefloor with plenty of seating, including a cosy crushed velvet booth.
The club also has an outside smoking area, which is often just as packed as inside. Open Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10pm, it's available for private hire on other nights.
The PeopleNative is the place to be if you care more about music and having a good time than if your shoes match your nail varnish.
Although it's frequented by a fair few fashionistas, you can always guarantee a friendly crowd and that includes the bar staff and the bouncers, who are always happy to help, even on a busy Saturday night.
The MusicSince opening in September 2005, Native has attracted big names from Bonobo to DJ Format to complement the underground vibe.
Saturday's superb Western Soul night alternates between sets from Hundred Strong, Boca 45 and Massive Attack's Daddy G for a great mix of breaks, funk and soul.
For £4, Tuesday's Run night is also worth checking out, billing itself as "one of the city's premier Drum and Bass nights".
The DrinkDon't expect anything exceptional on the drinks front, but all your favourites are behind the bar, with beers, wines and spirits aplenty. Just don't forget that it's cash only.
The Last WordLicenced until 4am, Native deserves its place in the rankings of Bristol's top clubs. Unassuming and unpretentious, there's no excuse for not venturing past the humdrum of Whiteladies and Park Street for something altogether cooler.
